Asia Cup 2023: BCB mulling over Shakib Al Hasan’s availability for ODI captaincy

Asia Cup 2023: Following a series of dramatic events within the Bangla Tigers’ setup involving their top players, retirements, and captaincy saga, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is now considering their next move after their regular ODI skipper, Tamim Iqbal, was ruled out of the Asia Cup 2023 due to a back injury. Consequently, he made the decision to step down from the captaincy. It is worth noting that the esteemed opener had earlier shocked the world by not only relinquishing the captaincy but also announcing his retirement from cricket. However, under the intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he made a swift comeback from retirement.

In the latest development, BCB President Najmul Hassan emphasized that their most experienced veteran player, Shakib Al Hasan, is their prime choice after Tamim Iqbal’s departure. They are working towards ensuring that the top all-rounder is available to serve the country before officially appointing him as Captain, with the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup scheduled to begin on October 5. The board intends to appoint Shakib as captain for a minimum of two years, recognizing the immense pressure the team will face at the highest level. Thus, they believe an experienced campaigner like Shakib will efficiently handle these challenges.

“We have not discussed captaincy yet. We have to take a break and think about it. As I have said before, if it was one series, we could have gone with the vice-captain (Litton). But now we have to think long term,” Nazmul said during a press conference in Dhaka yesterday.

“There are two problems. If we think about the long term it is one thing. But there is the World Cup as well and the pressure of the World Cup is not small. If I select a new guy and whether he can take this pressure – we need to consider that as well. If we choose someone on a long term basis and he is not available after one year, what will we do? So we need to discuss these things,” the BCB president continued.

In addition, while discussing the possibility of bringing Shakib Al Hasan to the forefront. Najmul Hassan expressed the need to ascertain the player’s availability for the next two years with the Bangladesh team. He also mentioned wicketkeeper Litton Das, who recently captained the Bangla Tigers in a series against Afghanistan at home. The management is eager to assess whether Das can consistently handle the batting responsibilities. Particularly when comparing the pressure of a bilateral series to the high-stakes environment of the ODI Cricket World Cup.

“Shakib is the obvious choice but can you say he will play for two years? We don’t know that and so we need to know his plan and talk with the board. I think the easiest choice is Shakib and there is no problem with it,” the BCB president further stated.

“Leading in the bilateral series and World Cup are two different things. And whether that influences his (Litton) batting or not, we need to see everything. We will take a decision without hurrying it up,” Hassan concluded.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, is expected to commence preparations with the team for the Asia Cup 2023 upon his arrival on August 8. It’s important to note that the inter-continental tournament will take place in Sri Lanka and Pakistan starting from August 30.
