IPL 2024: Daniel Vettori takes over from Brian Lara as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad

IPL 2024: West Indies cricket great Brian Lara has parted ways with IPL (Indian Premier League) team Sunrisers Hyderabad, the franchise announced on Monday.

Before the start of the 2023 IPL season, Lara was appointed as the head coach for the Hyderabad-based franchise, stepping in after the departure of former head coach Tom Moody.

Previously, Lara had served as the strategic advisor and batting coach for SRH in the 2022 season. And he was promoted to the head coach role after Moody’s exit.

Unfortunately, under Lara’s guidance, the team struggled throughout the 2023 season and ended up at the bottom of the table. In 14 games, Hyderabad only managed to secure four victories while suffering ten defeats in the IPL 2023

After retiring from all forms of cricket following the 2015 Cricket World Cup, Vettori ventured into coaching. His coaching journey started as the head coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League, where he served from 2014 to 2018.

Beyond the IPL, Vettori also took up the role of spin bowling coach for the Bangladesh national team. Later, in August 2021, he assumed the position of head coach for the Caribbean Premier League franchise, Barbados Royals.

In his capacity as the assistant and spin bowling coach for Australia. Vettori played a significant role in nurturing the performance of Nathan Lyon and discovering promising talents like Todd Murphy. Murphy’s Test debut against India was an outstanding success as he picked up 7 wickets under Vettori’s guidance.

Since the 2021 season, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has struggled and remained in the bottom half of the table. They endured a disappointing run, finishing last in two out of the last three seasons in the Indian Premier League. The team has undergone significant changes in leadership, with three different captains—David Warner, Kane Williamson, and Aiden Markram—in the last three years. Similarly, the coaching role saw three changes before Brian Lara’s tenure. As SRH replaced Tom Moody due to his inability to deliver satisfactory results.
