WI vs IND: In his debut international series against West Indies, young Indian batsman Tilak Varma expressed his determination to excel, giving his absolute best while concentrating on his fundamentals and strengths.

Currently, Tilak is a crucial member of the Indian T20I squad, which is competing in a five-match series against West Indies in the Caribbean. The upcoming game, the second T20I, is scheduled for Sunday in Guyana. Unfortunately, India is currently trailing 0-1 in the series. Nonetheless, Tilak’s impressive debut saw him score a solid 39 runs off 22 balls in the first T20I.

In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) featuring Ishan Kishan, his Mumbai Indians (MI) teammate in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Tilak said, “West Indies is a good side in T20Is. I want to follow my basics, follow my strengths and give my 100 per cent. I do not want to get nervous.”

On when he got to know about his selection, Tilak said that he was playing Duleep Trophy when he got the news and immediately talked to his family and coach, who were all emotional.

“I was playing Duleep Trophy and I got to know about the squad announcement. I called my coach and family immediately. They were all happy and emotional. I wanted to talk more, but could not. My mom and dad were really emotional,” he said.

Tilak further said that he was not playing his first-ever IPL season in 2022 with an Indian call-up in his mind.

“I was playing with a mindset that I will get more chances if I do well in my first IPL. I was not thinking about playing for India. I worked on my process and I got my results,” he said.

Talking about his body tattoos, Tilak said, “I wanted to try it. I asked my coach. He asked me to focus and reach a particular level and then start doing it.”

Tilak Varma has proven to be a remarkable discovery for MI during the 2020s decade. In his debut season in 2022, despite MI’s bottom-place finish, he displayed his talent by amassing 397 runs in 14 matches, boasting an impressive average of 36.09 and a strike rate of 131.02. During this season, he notched up two half-centuries, with his highest score being 61. Continuing his excellence, this year’s second season with the Blue and Gold saw him accumulate 343 runs in 11 matches at a remarkable average of 42.88 and a phenomenal strike rate of over 164. Among his achievements, he recorded one gutsy half-century, scoring an unbeaten 84 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

In the realm of T20 cricket, Tilak has showcased his prowess in a total of 48 matches, accumulating 1,457 runs. With an average of 37.35 and a blistering strike rate of over 143. Within this format, he boasts an impressive record of ten half-centuries, and his highest score remains unbeaten at 84*. For domestic cricket, he represents Hyderabad, contributing significantly to their success.

Switching to List-A matches, Tilak has showcased remarkable consistency. After playing in 25 matches and amassing 1,236 runs at a staggering average of 56.18. And a strike rate slightly above 101. He has achieved five centuries and fifties in these 25 innings, underscoring his ability to perform consistently at this level.

Delving into first-class cricket, Tilak has participated in nine matches. And scoring a total of 523 runs at an average of 37.35. During these matches, he recorded one century and two fifties in 15 innings. And his best score stands at an impressive 121.

Overall, Tilak Varma’s performances across different formats of the game illustrate his immense talent and potential. That make him a valuable asset for both MI and Hyderabad.
