World Cup 2023: “Don’t write off Indian team…” – Mohammed Kaif appeals to fans

World Cup 2023: Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif made a heartfelt plea to fans, urging them to rally behind the Indian men’s team as they gear up for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, which will be hosted in their home country later this year.

In recent tournaments and significant matches such as the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 held in Australia, the ICC World Test Championship, and various crucial bilateral series, India had to face challenges without the presence of key players like Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, and others. The absence of these star players often put India in a tough spot, leading to their exit from the T20 World Cup semifinals after a ten-wicket defeat against England, as well as a loss in the WTC final against Australia.

However, with the Asia Cup scheduled from August 30 in Pakistan/Sri Lanka, and the much-awaited World Cup to hosted in India from October 5 to November 19, there renewed hope and anticipation among the players and fans alike. Kaif’s appeal is a call to stand firmly behind the Indian team, providing them with unwavering support as they take on these crucial upcoming challenges.

“Small request for cricket fans: Don’t write off the Indian team. Show unity, don’t be divided by your individual choice of players. Rohit and Dravid have played big tournaments without stars like Bumrah. World Cup is coming home, the boys need your support,” tweeted Kaif.

Despite achieving significant success in bilateral cricket during the 2020s, the Indian cricket team has also faced some notable disappointments, particularly in ICC tournaments.

In 2021, under the leadership of former captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri, India exited the ICC T20 World Cup, despite considered one of the favorites. Their disappointing performance included a crushing 10-wicket defeat to Pakistan during the group stage.

The woes continued in January 2022, with KL Rahul as captain, as India suffered a 3-0 loss in the ODI series against South Africa in South Africa. The Test series under Virat’s leadership also lost, with India facing a 2-1 defeat.

In August-September 2022, India was unable to defend their Asia Cup title under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid, making an early exit in the super four stage.

While the Men in Blue managed to reach the semifinals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, they handed a devastating 10-wicket defeat by eventual champions England in November.

In their recent series against the West Indies, a team that did not qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India, India faced a six-wicket loss. During the three-match ODI series, India’s batting performance was subpar, losing five wickets in a chase of 115 in the first match and bowled out for 181 in the second, which the West Indies comfortably chased. Although they won the third ODI comprehensively, their struggles continued as they started the T20I series with a narrow four-run loss in a chase of 150.

The series of disappointing performances in white-ball cricket, especially during the World Cup year and crucial ICC tournaments, has left fans disappointed and concerned about the team’s form and prospects.
